Learning supporthands in the middle on top of each other

Mutdapilly State School provides a network of programs and support to students identified with learning difficulties and learning disabilities. These programs are coordinated by our Principal and are supported by a Support Teacher – Literacy and Numeracy (STLaN), learning support teachers, teacher aides and volunteers.

The STLaN’s responsibilities include:

  • Assisting teachers with modifications to the curriculum.
  • Liaise with various parties involved to gather data.
  • Develops and implements and assists with monitoring the support plan in collaboration with the class teacher/s (goals, modifications to strategies, assessment techniques, resources, management).
  • Referring a student for review of the program type if required.
  • Referring students to other specialist teachers or outside agencies.
  • Attending case conferences with various parties involved.
  • Liaising with high schools for transition of students.
  • Write detailed reports for outside agencies.
  • Purchasing resources to meet children's needs and professional development of teachers.

Parents should discuss any concerns with the class teacher, administration or the support teacher if they feel their child is in need of specialist support.

Special Education Program

Mutdapilly State School caters for students with a diagnosed disability that have undergone the Educational Adjustment Program (EAP) referral process to determine the level of support required for their child to access the curriculum. A range of programs and support is available. Each student has an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) with goals addressing their needs in their area of disability.

Guidance officer

Guidance officers focus on assisting students achieve to their potential in the most appropriate educational setting. They work closely with students and their families, teachers, non-teaching professionals and in some instances departmental agencies and authorities. They do this in order to provide a wide range of support to students and their families.

A guidance officer's responsibilities include:

  • Working directly with students and teachers, support personnel, family and other specialists/professionals.
  • Providing guidance and counselling services to students and their families.
  • Performing case management and referral services to optimise students' access and engagement in education.
  • Preparing and implementing professional and personal skill development programs for administrators, teachers and parents.
  • Working collaboratively with other school-based support personnel to assess and address the needs of students.
  • Planning or assisting in planning support programs that can help students achieve positive outcomes.
  • Identifying factors that can be barriers to the learning and development of students.
  • Supporting the personal and social development of students.
